Los Angeles to Las Vegas - Mon, 8 Dec (& Tue, 9 Dec)

Next stop is Sin City, but this time with mum Lochnette and Oom Frans, our travelling companions for the next week or so - very exciting! Its not that long a drive from LA to Vegas - around 5 hours if you stop a bit.

We were booked in at the New York New York hotel on the strip and all were very excited to see what the place was all about.

Check-in: a long line that moved quickly

View from our room - that is the strip down there and opposite us the MGM Grand - when built I think it was the worlds largest hotel ito number of beds. But that was in the early 90's
Vegas' magic is of course its lights, so since we only had two nights there, we made good use of our time and visited a lot of hotels - most of these are within walking distance on the strip.

Our hotel had a really fun roller coaster inside it. I think I rode that thing 8 or 9 times :). The NY NY were themed, well, as NY:

Lady Liberty - even here a class act despite being surrounded by this wonderful falseness

The Brooklynn bridge - right in front of our hotel

Excaliber - across the street from the NY NY

the front of the Luxor

Planet Hollywood hotel. I like the "PH"

We could very well have been in Paris

The Bellagio - famous for its scenes in the movie Ocean's Eleven and also for its beautiful water / fountain shows.

We also walked Vegas during the day.

I was keen to visit the pawn shop where the reality series 'Pawn Stars' are being filmed. Unfortunately, filming was done for the day when we pitched up.

The inside of the shop seems a lot larger on TV!

Rick and Chumlee ;-)
Next stop, Venice

You have got to visit Vegas with an open mind. I think what they achieved here is amazing - it is really fun to walk around all these themed resorts and with just a little bit of imagination it almost feels as if you could be at whatever place/theme they depict.

The inside of all the hotels looks all similar though. Well mostly.

And then we had these HUGE cocktails at Treasure Island.

A good thing our hotel was close by, otherwise I am not sure how my veeery tipsy wife would have gotten home . . .

Vegas started off in its downtown area, with all the first casino's located in the main street, Fremont Street. Since my previous visit to this city in 1993, this street has now being enclosed with a huge roof, which they use as a light show during the evenings. Fremont street is also famous for all its strip clubs, the most well know probably the girls of Glitter Gulch:

the (in)famous Girls of Glitter Gultch

the Fremont Street light show

eish!
A visit to Vegas is not a visit unless you have tried your luck. I could not get this lot away from the shiny lights and ringing bells!
