We were really sad to leave Bruce and Fio behind in Austin, but that is how life goes. Next on our itinerary was the visit to Gregor, Shelley & baby Ike, Brenda's cousin and his family living in Fort Collins, CO. We last saw Greg & Shelley in Cape Town in 2011(?) when they visited South Africa, so excitement was in the air as we will now get to meet Ike Willem Schuurman for the first time.

First we had to get another lift with United:

Our flight path took us over the Texas panhandle, and then a red colored river, which I thought was the Colorado (Colorado in Spanish = 'Colored Red'). It turned out however to be the Canadian River after consulting Google Earth:

(Just a side note on United - Up to now all my previous experiences with US domestic airlines were that they were nothing but CRAP: Old planes, grumpy waitresses in their 70's who only gave you some stale peanuts if your really asked nicely with any other refreshments you had to pay for in low cost fashion and also old airport terminals. We had five flights on United: Chicago to Toronto to Dulles to Austin to Denver. My experience this time round was a huge improvement. In fact, United's service was on par with most European / South African short haul services: New planes (we flew the 737-900 from AUS to DEN, which is a few feet longer than the -800), friendly hostesses and upgraded terminals. Certainly nothing to complain about, although the baggage charge for your fist piece of luggage remains a con. You still also have to pay for anything in addition to a pack of peanuts and a small glass of soft drink).

Greg came to fetch us at the beautifully newly renovated and impressive Denver International airport, and we started to catch up during the hour or so drive to their hometown, Fort Collins:
